Ceramics at Art Shack in Brooklyn

I had been wanting to try the pottery wheel forever. Ironically, despite going to art school, I only just did it last weekend. During my foundational year I focused on typography and painting, declared my major shortly after, and digital mediums took over from there. The wheel never happened, until now.

After researching studios in Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Clay, Gasworks, Clay House & Choplet, I landed on Artshack Brooklyn . Versatile classes, a cafe, late hours, BYOB, and a mission centered on making ceramics accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Easy yes.

Our session with Camila Ruiz started with the basics before opening into an hour of free play. The encouragement to recycle clay and start fresh meant we spent the whole time experimenting, which I loved. We each left with a piece to be glazed and picked up three weeks later. Highly recommend for anyone curious about pottery.

Take a look at their website for more info on some of their offerings including events & exhibitions.

The green bowl you see below is our final pieces, painted and glazed. I’d give it a solid C+.
