Volunteering with In Gods Love We Deliver
I have been meaning to write about my involvement with God's Love We Deliver for a while now. When I first moved to New York, I kept seeing their name around the city but didn't learn much about the organization until a side project brought me to their door. I fell in love with the community almost immediately and have been an active volunteer ever since. The team is wonderful, the work is meaningful, and since sessions often run over eight hours, you get to know people pretty well.
This year, God's Love We Deliver turns 35. Their mission is to improve the health and well-being of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. They prepare and deliver nutritious, medically tailored meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare food for themselves, and offer nutrition education and counseling to clients, families, and care providers. All services are provided free of charge, regardless of income.
There are volunteer opportunities for individuals and corporations alike, and my personal favorite are the Holiday and Special Projects initiatives. And if time is tight, you can always sponsor a meal directly from your couch.
If you’re looking to volunteer here are some other non-profits I’ve worked with during my time in New York:
CAIR or The Council on American–Islamic Relations is a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. It is headquartered on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. I was introduced to CAIR through a project from Designers Available also.
Lower East Side Ecology Center provides unique e-waste and composting services, environmental stewardship opportunities, and educational programming to all New Yorkers. I found out about these guys way back in the day through a class at Parsons.
The Bowery Mission is amazing! I used to live in Alphabet City back in the day and was super close to a volunteer center. The Bowery Mission has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since the 1870s.
New York Cares is a nonprofit organization focused on volunteer management and was founded by a group of New York residents in 1987 who wanted to take action against social issues in New York City. The organization currently engages 65,000 volunteers in service each year and have so many different initiatives! My husband still volunteers with them and loves it.
