Volunteering with In Gods Love We Deliver
Excited to finally write about my involvement with In Gods Love We deliver. Long Story Short - when I first moved to New York I had seen marketing for In Gods Love all over the city but didn’t really learn about the organization till a project with Designers Available came along (I’m a member of DA and this is a great resource for designers looking to give back). Fairly instantly fell in love with the community and have been an active volunteer ever since. The team is lovely and volunteering is always fun. Often we spend over 8 hours together so got to know some folks pretty well.
The mission:
God’s Love We Deliver turns 35 this year! The mission of God’s Love We Deliver is to improve the health and well-being of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. We prepare and deliver nutritious, high-quality meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. We also provide illness-specific nutrition education and counseling to our clients, families, care providers, and other service organizations. All of our services are provided free to clients without regard to income.
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for individuals, and corporations - and my favorite part is the Holiday & Special Projects initiatives. If you don’t have time you can always sponsor a meal straight from your couch!
If you’re looking to volunteer here are some other non-profits I’ve worked with during my time in New York:
CAIR or The Council on American–Islamic Relations is a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. It is headquartered on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. I was introduced to CAIR through a project from Designers Available also.
Lower East Side Ecology Center provides unique e-waste and composting services, environmental stewardship opportunities, and educational programming to all New Yorkers. I found out about these guys way back in the day through a class at Parsons.
The Bowery Mission is amazing! I used to live in Alphabet City back in the day and was super close to a volunteer center. The Bowery Mission has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since the 1870s.
New York Cares is a nonprofit organization focused on volunteer management and was founded by a group of New York residents in 1987 who wanted to take action against social issues in New York City. The organization currently engages 65,000 volunteers in service each year and have so many different initiatives! My husband still volunteers with them and loves it.
