Simple portfolio advice
As an ADP list mentor, I love the community and the opportunity to connect with people across such a wide range of roles and industries. The platform is thoughtfully built and has become a natural complement to the mentorship work I do through my alumni board.
Through the ADPList newsletter I came across a gem: "This portfolio guide will land you interviews" by founder Felix Lee. Straightforward, effective, and worth bookmarking. Sharing it here felt like a given.
Key takeaways:
Three is the magic number. Max three case studies, but make them great.
Don't show what you don't love. You have to talk about everything in your portfolio, so only include work you can speak to with genuine enthusiasm.
Show your range. Different industries, same impact.
Make it visual. Less text, more images.
Add prototypes. Not just screenshots and static text.
Edit your story. Fewer slides, crisper narrative.
Keep it simple. Test with non-designers and non-tech friends. If they understand your role, it will land even better with designers.
Polish. Check your spelling. Check your alignments.
Test. Talk to ADPList mentors, get critiques, do mock interviews.
Finish it. It will never be perfect, so time box it and get it done within a couple of weeks.
