Ladies Wine & Design
I love Jessica Walsh. Ladies, Wine & Design was started by Jessica Walsh after this happened when she reflected on how women in creative fields can sometimes feel competitive or unsupported. Only a small percentage of creative directors are women, and LWD is trying to shift that through mentorship circles, portfolio reviews, talks, and creative meetups. In under two years, it expanded to chapters in 200+ cities worldwide. If you’re a student or creative in NYC, you can reach out here. If you want to explore another chapter, check the city map. Events are free.
Being at the foundry felt like a throwback. I studied design, and during foundation year I took so many print and letter-making classes. That’s where my love for typography really started. It was nostalgic being around the machines and letterpress materials again. The experience reminded me how much I miss working with my hands now that most of my work lives on a screen.
At the event, we learned the nuances of working with metal type and how it shaped the typography we use today. We also talked about ways to pull inspiration from analog processes and bring more tactility into modern work. It was a fun night complete with cheese and wine. I love Ladies, Wine, and Design. Linking it in case anyone wants to check it out. They host events throughout the year and are almost always looking for volunteers.
